Our Mission Statement...

We will be discussing the various ways technology in the form of social media and other online capacities can be used in the elementary and secondary classroom. Our aim is to explore how using these methods in the classroom can allow for a new emerging relationship between teachers and students. A relationship based on the collaborative gathering of information and community building. We will be looking at our own areas of interest and how new technologies can be incorporated into our own teaching methodologies and how learning theories apply to online learning. We hope that you find the information contained within this blog useful and helpful in creating strategic approaches to effective implementation of online learning. Our goal is to also share and discuss the opportunities and challenges we might face in using current technologies in learning and while expliring future opportunities and areas of growth.

Using Social Media to Bring Old Classmates Together

Hi everyone,

This blog is centered around using social media within the classroom (or outside the classroom as most of us are not currently teaching!), but I wanted to talk about the impact social media has on bringing old classmates together.  Graduating from high school approximately 6-7 years ago, I naturally lost touch with many of my old classmates, teachers, and most importantly, school Chaplin.  It was only through Facebook that I learned recently that the school's old chaplin is terminally ill.  A Facebook group was created to share information about his illness, how he is feeling, and to invite everyone to a prayer mass to both pray for his health and see him.  What completely amazed me was the turnout both at the church and on the Facebook group.  The chaplin was under the impression that maybe 50 people would show up, tops, but he was shocked to see that hundreds and hundreds of past and present students were present.  This was only possible because of that particular Facebook group.  Had that not been created, our daily email notifications, questions being answered immediately, and so on, would not have occurred in literally a week.
The point being here is that the use of social media really does enable us to continue to connect and collaborate with one another for a greater cause.  This particular example allowed hundreds of high school alumni to come together, from all parts of the world, to send well wishes and gather together for a man who played a significant role in our educational career.
